Police Authority lobbies MPs for fair deal

Cambridgeshire Police Authority will meet MPs in Westminster today to discuss a fair deal for Cambridgeshire Constabulary in the light of planned spending cuts.

The aim of the meeting is to aid open discussion on the cuts the Constabulary is facing and how they will impact on local communities.

Police Authority approves 'balanced' budget

Cambridgeshire Police Authority has unanimously approved a 2.95 per cent increase in the policing share of Council Tax, delivering a 'balanced' budget for 2010/11.

The £130m budget was agreed at a full meeting of the Authority last night following months of discussions on efficiencies to enable delivery of a balanced budget. This means that the Authority is committed to maintaining PCSO and police officer numbers at existing levels for the forthcoming year.

Residents of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are being asked to take just five minutes to fill in a survey which will help police find out how much work is needed to raise awareness of the Policing Pledge.

The Pledge was introduced in December last year and is a 'service contract' between the police and the public. Great response to anti-social behaviour survey

Almost 1,100 people responded to the survey across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, the majority favouring a mixed 'tough action' and 'preventative' approach to dealing with anti-social behaviour.

Eviction of problem neighbours, dispersal zones, prosecution and community service all scored highly in the 'tough action' approach category. More local activities for young people, and better liaison with schools and parents fared best in the 'preventative' category.

Goodbye to long serving chairman and deputy

Cambridgeshire Police Authority will say goodbye to Chairman Keith Walters today, June 4.

Mr Walters, who has been a member of the Police Authority for 12 years and chairman for two, will not stand for re-election as a councillor in the local elections tomorrow and will therefore also cease to be a member of the Police Authority. The Authority will also say farewell to Vice Chair Judy Broadway who steps down after eight years.

Cambridgeshire Police Authority will consider a 'feasibility study' next week on the future of the divisional headquarters at Cambridge.

The independent report by Barker Storey Matthews was commissioned by the Police Authority to research whether refurbishment and extension of the current Parkside site, which has become too small and is becoming increasing costly to maintain, would be the best way to fulfil operational requirements in the future.

Authority Chairman to step down

Cambridgeshire Police Authority Chairman, Michael Williamson, has decided not to stand for re-election at the Authority's forthcoming Annual General Meeting on July 2.

Mr Williamson will step down at the AGM after the Authority's recommended period of three years. However he will continue as a Member of the Police Authority until March 2008, when he will conclude his term.

Authority approves 5% increase

Cambridgeshire Police Authority has approved a 5% increase in the policing part (precept) of Council Tax.

The increase equates to an extra 14p per week for a Band D property and takes the total annual precept to £149.40 per household (Band D).

The £116m budget was agreed at a full meeting of the Authority tonight following months of discussions on efficiencies to enable the Authority to maintain officer numbers at 1,401. This is 33 officer posts above the recommended Government level of 1,368 for 2007/08.

RUTH Rogers has been elected as the unopposed chairman of Cambridgeshire Police Authority for a third term at its Annual General Meeting yesterday (June 29).

Ruth, who took over as chairman in 2009, is an independent member and has sat on the authority for the past four years.

Authority make decision on provision of air support

AT THE full meeting of Cambridgeshire Police Authority on June 29 members discussed a proposal from the constabulary to change the way in which air support is provided in the force area.

The constabulary had recommended it entered into a consortium with Chiltern Air Support Unit, backed up with existing arrangements with Suffolk and Essex police forces.

MEMBERS of Cambridgeshire Police Authority are set to discuss plans by the force to extend the use of tasers at the Finance and Resources Committee on January 18.

The constabulary is planning to train up to 120 officers, in addition to already firearms trained officers, to use the less lethal devices which are designed to temporarily incapacitate through an electrical current. The effect only lasts for as long as the charge is applied.

MORE detainees are agreeing to speak Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) charged with checking on their care – and it is all down to the way they are asked.

The volunteers, who make unannounced visits to the constabulary’s custody blocks, have moved to ‘self introduction’. CAMBRIDGESHIRE Police Authority has unanimously agreed a zero increase in the policing share of the council tax in return for a £1.2 million extra grant from the government.

The Government is encouraging all local authorities not to increase their council tax in 2012/13. To offset this financial pressure it is offering local authorities a one-off additional government grant instead of raising council tax to fund services, including policing, in 2012/13.
